Dr. James M. Schuerger Endowment Fund Scholarship

Dr. James Schuerger was born in 1932 in Lakewood, OH. He earned a B.A. at John Carroll University with a major in English, and M.A. a Ph.D degrees in counseling and research from Kent State University. He worked as a research assistant professor at the University of Illinois before joining the faculty in the Department of Psychology at Cleveland State University in 1970.

At the university level, he worked as teacher, counselor, and researcher. He taught courses in psychological testing for more than 30 years, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Schuerger was a valued member of the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Cleveland State University until 2003. Over the course of his career, he had more than 100 publications on topics in psychological measurement. Dr. Schuerger passed away on January 7, 2021.

The Dr. James M. Schuerger Endowment Fund Scholarship was created to honor his legacy. Recipients of the scholarship are members of an under-represented student group; demonstrate financial need; and are undergraduate majors or graduate students in the Department of Psychology.  

To date, more than 30 students have received a Dr. James M. Schuerger Endowment Fund Scholarship award, totaling over $65,000 in scholarship support.
